In Japan, people do not need to have a car because a transportaion is well-developed, and people can go anywhere by a train. When I came here, in California, I felt I cannot go anywhere without a car. Even though there are some transportations such as a bus or sprinter, they are still inconvenient because the bus usually does not come on time, and the sprinter is so slow. As one of the greatest transportations in Japan, there is a train called "Shinkansen." The Shinkansen is a network of high-speed railway lines.
In 1964, Japanese people developed one which can travel up to 210 km/h (130 mph.) Nowadays, the network has expanded to link most major cities in Japan, and the lenghth is about 2,459 km (1,528mi). In addition, as the fastest Shinkansen in Japan, there is Tokaido Shinkansen (Its picture is on the right side.) which can travel up to 300 km/h (186 mph). Test runs have reached 443 km/h (275 mph) for conventional rail in 1996, and up to a world-record 581 km/h (361 mph) for maglev trainsets in 2003.

I hope that California has a same kind of transportation as Japanese one. However, lately, I read an interesting article about the future of California's transportations. As Aaron McLear wrote in his article, 'Gov.Schwarzenegger Urges Federal Investment in California’s High-Speed Rail ,' the California governments are planning to develop a high-speed rail system in California. On the left side, there is the pictuer of the sample train of the plan. As a model of the system, Japan is on the list of the countries which have a well-developed high-speed rail system. I believe that the Japanese high-speed railway system will be the model of the California's transportation. I hope that the goverment will bring the plan to completion, and people will be able to use a convenient transportation in California. Moreover, it will be able to lead up to solve the problems such as the pollution of exhaust gas and the growth of population in California.
I know "Shinkansen" is awesome, but please don't forget that there are also some cities which don't have this kind of train. My hometown is the one of them. In my hometown, it is normal to have our own car because our bus and tram are kind of slow and they come twice or three times per hour. Sounds like in CA, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteAlso, because the price of land in urban city is so expensive that you cost more to have and park your car than using the train, right? If we think about environment, I guess urban cities, which must have not so clean air, are doing better. hahaha
When I came to California, I was little disappointed in the public transporation here. In California, a person is not independent if they do not have a car or cannot drive. In Kazkhstan a person does not need a car because public transportation is excellent and cheap. All major cities of Kazakhstan are served by taxis, buses, trolleybuses, and trams. Buses can be overcrowded, but they are currently the cheapest, safest and most reliable form of trasportation. There are regular bus, trolleybus, and tram connections that arrive in every 5 or 10 minures. A person can buy a monthly pass for the trolleybus and tram that cost only $6.
ReplyDeleteIf a person does not like to use an overcrowded bus, he can take a taxi.
Before entering the car a person negotiates with the driver about the fair. If the two people cannot agree on the price, the passager stops a different car to get a better price. Some foreigners are very happy to drive from one part of the city to other for $3-$4. It does not depend how many passengers are in the car.
I agree with Gulzham Walker. California needs to improve the transportation. In Mexico where I'm from has taxis and buses, and they are cheap. One day I rode the greyhound from Oceanside to Fresno CA. the trasportation wasnot comfortable, and I rode the bus from 4:pm to 1:00. While driving a car I can get there in 4 to 5 hours the most obeying the speed limit. In Mexico they have luxury buses such as elite line, which is comfortable and the bus driver plays a movie while traveling. California needs to improve the transportation.
