"EL BAILE DE LOS VIEJITOS" (DANCE OF THE OLD MEN)

The "Dance of the Old Men" has more than one hundred years and is typical for Michoacan's culture. In Michoacan, the dance is danced in days of religious festivities like the day of theVirgin of Guadalupe (December 12). The dance is done with old men movements. One of the dances is called "train" because the dance begins slowly, imitating the sound of the train. They start walking slowly with little steps and are gradually accelerating. In the middle of the song starts to be faster, and that represents "youth" because it is when we think we control everything. The group tries to imitate the sounds of the train with his footsteps. After that, begins the joy of dance. This last part represents the joy of being alive and dance.

An importan characteristic of the "Dance of the Old Men" is that the dancers wear masks of old people along with their typical peasant clothing.
