The Vietnamese Traditional Dress

Each country has its own traditional clothing that is different from others. At the International festivals, such as The Olympics or Miss World Competition, we can identify people’s nationality by looking at the clothes they wear. Like Kimono in Japan or Han-bok in Korea, “Ao Dai” or long dress is one of the prominent features that symbolize the Vietnamese culture.
“Ao Dai” or long dress has existed in Vietnam for a long time, and it is a kind of national spirit. The Vietnamese are remarkably proud of it because it is very popular and traditional, and it enhances the Vietnamese women ‘s beauty. It is tight clothes with two long flats (front flat and back flat), which reach the knee or ankle, and has two long sleeves. The collar is round and embraces the neck. There are many hidden buttons that begin from the collar over to right armpit and down to right waist. The popularity of long dresses is signified in the fact that women at any age can wear long dress anywhere and anytime. Little girls look very lovely to wear new long dresses on New-Year-Days. Young girls become graceful and innocent with a white long dress on the way to school as uniforms. Every day at work, young ladies such as teachers, flight attendants, and bank officers seem more attractive in their long dress uniforms. Old women also can wear long dress for worship. Especially in any Vietnamese festivals or ceremonies like wedding parties, anniversaries or competitions, long dresses are formal national costumes. The brides have to wear them on their wedding-days; some singers wear them for their performances; female politicians in long dresses look very impressive at international conferences. At many Miss Vietnamese competitions, wearing a long dress is one of the enforced parts of the competition. Foreign people have deep impressions when seeing a young lady wearing long dress at the first time. The long dress has a secretive attraction because it shows the beauty of the woman who wears it such as her shape, her shoulders, her arms, and her hips. Some criticizes say, “Long dress covers everything but hides nothing.” Vietnamese women in the long dress have been a great theme that inspires writers, composers, and artists in many aspects of art. Women look more elegant and noble when wearing long dresses. I think long dress will attract more and more people in the globe and it could be meaningful gifts to present friends or relatives whenever traveling to Vietnam.
